Is Linen Itchy? — What the Fabric Actually Feels Like Against the Skin

Linen’s reputation for being itchy — where it comes from, what grade determines, and what to expect from premium linen.

Linen has a reputation for being itchy. The reputation is partly deserved and partly a consequence of grade. Lower-grade, short-staple linen — the kind used in inexpensive garments — does feel rough against the skin. The short fibres produce a coarser yarn, and the surface of the cloth has a texture that registers against sensitive skin, particularly in the first few wears.

Long-staple Belgian linen is a different experience. The longer fibres spin into finer, smoother yarn, and the surface of the cloth is noticeably less coarse. Against the skin, well-made Belgian linen feels smooth rather than scratchy — closer to a fine cotton than to the rough linen most people have encountered in lower-quality pieces.

“Cheap linen can be itchy. Premium long-staple Belgian linen, worn for a season, is not.”

— Pieter Petros, founder

The other factor is time. Linen softens with wear and washing. A shirt that feels slightly firm in the first week will feel noticeably different after five or six washes. The fibres relax, the weave loosens slightly, and the hand of the fabric changes in a way that no synthetic fabric replicates. This is one of the qualities that makes Belgian linen a long-term investment rather than a seasonal purchase.

For skin sensitivity: pure linen is generally well tolerated by people with sensitive skin, particularly when compared with synthetic fabrics. For people who find wool itchy or who react to synthetic fabrics, linen is a common alternative. The breathability of the flax fibre also means the skin stays drier against linen than against cotton — reduced moisture against the skin reduces irritation for many people.

The honest answer: cheap linen can be itchy. Premium long-staple Belgian linen, worn for a season, is not.
