Instead, gently blot any excess sun cream from the surface with a clean cloth or tissue, removing as much of the product as possible without working it into the fabric.
The cold water pre-treatment. Rinse the affected area under cold water — not hot, which can set the stain permanently — to dilute the sun cream before applying any treatment. Hot water causes the oils in the sun cream to bond with the linen fibres more strongly.
The gentle detergent method. Apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent or gentle dish soap directly to the stain and work it in gently with a soft-bristled brush or with the fingertips. Allow to sit for 10-15 minutes before rinsing with cold water. Repeat if necessary before washing the garment normally at 30 degrees. Do not apply bleach to Belgian linen — it damages the flax fibre and can cause permanent discolouration.
Prevention. The most effective approach is to allow sun cream to absorb fully into the skin before putting on a PP linen shirt, and to carry the shirt rather than wearing it immediately after sun cream application.
