The question of whether linen shrinks in heat is one of the most common concerns for buyers of linen garments — and the answer is specific depending on the type of heat, the temperature range, and the quality of the linen in question. Certified Belgian linen behaves consistently in heat when cared for correctly.

In washing: the temperature threshold. Linen can shrink in washing water above 40 degrees Celsius — the flax fibre contracts under sustained exposure to hot water, and this contraction is largely permanent. Pre-shrunk linen fabrics (which most quality linen garments are) have less residual shrinkage capacity, but washing at temperatures above 40 degrees consistently over time can cause gradual reduction in garment dimensions. PP recommends washing at 30 degrees maximum for this reason.

In drying: the tumble dryer risk. The tumble dryer is the most significant heat-related risk for linen garments. The combination of heat, mechanical agitation, and moisture creates the conditions for significant, irreversible shrinkage. PP linen garments should never be tumble dried. Hang drying at room temperature is the correct method — it produces no shrinkage and maintains the garment dimensions indefinitely with correct care.

In ironing: manageable with correct technique. Ironing Belgian linen at the correct temperature (the linen or high-heat setting on most irons, applied to the fabric while slightly damp) does not cause shrinkage. The moisture in the slightly damp fabric distributes the iron's heat evenly; dry ironing at high temperature can cause localised heat stress on the fabric surface.

In ambient heat: no concern. Wearing a PP linen shirt in a hot climate — 40 degrees in Dubai, 35 degrees in Mykonos — does not cause shrinkage. Ambient air heat without the mechanical and moisture factors of washing does not affect linen dimensions.
