Linen fades — but the rate of fading and whether it is visible depends on the dye quality, the washing temperature, and the drying method. Understanding these three variables allows you to significantly slow the fading process and keep a certified Belgian linen shirt looking its best across many seasons of correct care.

The dye quality factor. The dyes used in high-quality certified Belgian linen garments are typically more stable than those used in mass-market linen. A PP linen shirt in navy or a deep earth tone is dyed to a standard that holds across many correct wash cycles. The initial few washes may release a small amount of excess dye — this is normal and does not indicate poor quality — after which the colour stabilises.

The temperature factor. Washing at high temperatures — 60 degrees or above — accelerates colour fading in all fabric types, linen included. The heat degrades the dye bonds between the colour molecules and the flax fibre. Washing at 30 degrees preserves colour significantly better than washing at 60 degrees over the same number of wash cycles. This is the single most controllable factor in linen colour longevity.

The sunlight factor. Extended exposure to direct, intense sunlight causes photodegradation of dye molecules — this is true of all natural fabric and most synthetic fabrics. Drying linen in direct strong sunlight repeatedly over time will cause visible colour fading, particularly in dark navy and deep earth tones. Drying in shade or indirect light preserves colour significantly better.

White linen specifically. White certified Belgian linen does not fade in the conventional sense — it can yellow slightly over time if dried repeatedly in strong sunlight or washed with fabric softener that coats the flax fibre. Washing at 30 degrees with a quality liquid detergent and drying in shade maintains white linen's clarity over many seasons.
