The Best Linen Brand for Mallorca
An island that has woven its own cloth for centuries is a demanding place to bring someone else's.
In the old houses of Mallorca, the curtains, cushions and bedcovers are often made of roba de llengües, the island's "cloth of tongues", whose flame-shaped pattern comes from dyeing the threads before they are woven. Workshops such as Teixits Vicens in Pollença have woven it since the nineteenth century, and it is still made on the island today. A visitor looking for a linen brand in Mallorca is choosing cloth in a place that has long known the difference between a textile made with care and one made in a hurry.
That standard is the right one to apply. Mallorca is three islands in one: the city of Palma, with its Gothic cathedral above the bay and the shaded avenue of the Born; the Serra de Tramuntana, a mountain range of stone villages and terraced olive groves recognised by UNESCO as a cultural landscape; and the softer south and east, with long sandy beaches at Es Trenc and small coves cut into pale rock. A brand that suits the island has to dress all three, often on the same day, from a morning in the city to an evening in Deià.
“Cloth that is woven slowly and sewn by hand looks at home among things that were made the same way.”
— Pieter Petros, founderPieter Petros answers that standard on its own terms. Its garments are cut and sewn by hand, and linen is the material at the heart of the collection. Nothing about it is seasonal in the fast sense: a PP shirt is intended for many summers, softening a little with each, in the way the old Mallorcan houses keep their woven cloth in use for generations.
Palma asks for city dress in a warm climate. A morning between the cathedral, the covered market of Santa Catalina and the galleries of the old town is easily covered by the Cuba Linen Shirt in Lemon Yellow with PP Casual Linen Trousers in Sapphire Blue, a combination that holds its own against the honey-coloured stone. For a woman, the HER Cuba Linen Shirt in the same Lemon Yellow, worn loose over white trousers, keeps the day cool and the outline calm. In July and August the city sits in the low thirties by afternoon, and a shirt that lets air through the weave matters more than any other detail.
The Tramuntana is different. The old wooden train from Palma to Sóller climbs through tunnels and orange groves, and from Sóller the road winds on to Deià, where the poet Robert Graves made his home for most of his adult life and is buried in the churchyard on the hill. These villages are made of stone, and the restaurants on their terraces are relaxed but considered. The PP Natural Set in Vanille, whose shirt and shorts are cut as a pair, suits a walk between them, and for dinner the Laos Short Sleeve Linen Shirt in Mint Green with long linen trousers picks up the colour of the olive terraces below. The PP natural sets include the full range of those matched pieces.
The coast completes the picture. Port d'Andratx in the west, with its yachts and hillside villas, and the beaches of the south are where the day turns to the water. PP swim shorts in Oatmeal serve the swim and the walk back to the beach restaurant. For a woman, the linen ladies set in Dubarry works from the cove to a late lunch, and the Amelia linen dress shirt in Hibiscus takes over in the evening, worn as a dress on a harbour terrace. The detailed wardrobe for each part of the island is in what to wear in Mallorca.
The collection reaches Mallorca through pieterpetros.com, where every colourway described here is listed. In the Mediterranean it is presented in person at Tiziano Brunetto in Santa Margherita Ligure, on the Portofino coast, and at One&Only Aesthesis near Athens and One&Only Kéa Island in Greece. Travellers who move between the Balearics, the Riviera and the Greek islands each summer can see the collection in person on more than one of those coasts.
In Pollença the looms at Teixits Vicens still run, and the cloth of tongues they produce is bought to be used for decades. A linen shirt worn on this island keeps that kind of company.
